Celebrating a Decade of Global Impact – GSA's 10th Anniversary

A Decade of Black & Global – GSA's 10th Anniversary Celebration

In October 2023, the Global Strategists Association (GSA) proudly celebrated its 10th anniversary with an inspiring event titled "Black & Global." This milestone honored a decade of commitment to global engagement and service to Chicago’s African Diaspora community. Over the past ten years, GSA has worked diligently to advance racial equity in global affairs, promoting opportunities for Black leaders and the broader African Diaspora to actively participate in global issues and decisions.

The Vision of Appreccia D. Faulkner – GSA's Founder

The journey of GSA began in 2013, founded by Chicago native Appreccia D. Faulkner. With her vision, GSA has been committed to creating pathways for African Americans and the broader Diaspora to engage in international affairs. Appreccia’s dedication has been instrumental in ensuring that Black voices are represented in global dialogues, and challenging the barriers that have historically excluded these communities. Her work has transformed GSA from a local initiative into a movement that inspires global citizenship and global leadership.

Milestones of the Past Decade – Fellowship and Scholars Programs

In ten years, GSA has achieved incredible milestones, including the creation of the Global Fellowship and the Global Scholars Program. The Global Fellowship was designed to prepare local leaders for global service, equipping them with the tools and insights needed to make an impact on the world stage. Additionally, the Global Scholars Program provides high school students with opportunities to participate in cultural exchanges and leadership training, encouraging young people to see themselves as future global leaders. These initiatives embody GSA’s mission of promoting global citizenship and ensuring racial equity in international affairs.

Empowering Through Forums and Workshops

GSA has also hosted more than fifty forums and workshops over the past decade, all focused on empowering individuals to become global citizens. These events have brought together community members, thought leaders, and international strategists to explore important topics such as global leadership, racial equity, and international collaboration. By facilitating these discussions, GSA has provided a platform for historically excluded voices to be heard and has encouraged Chicago’s Black community to engage deeply with issues affecting the world.

Honoring the Changemakers – Celebrating Influential Leaders

The "Black & Global" anniversary celebration also highlighted the achievements of several incredible honorees who have significantly impacted both local and global communities. Honorees included MTV Host and journalist Dometi Pongo, who has been an influential voice in media, and Eli Williamson, Co-Founder of Leave No Veteran Behind, who works tirelessly to support veterans. Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, the inaugural Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer at the U.S. Department of State, was recognized for her leadership in advancing diversity within foreign affairs. Adrienne Bailey, an International Education Consultant, and Lakeisha Grey-Sewell, Founder & CEO of Girls Like Me Project, were also honored for their dedication to education and advocacy. These leaders exemplify the core values of GSA, showcasing what it means to lead with purpose, vision, and a commitment to equity.

Looking Forward – GSA’s Commitment to the Future

As GSA celebrates its 10-year milestone, the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to changing the face of global affairs. The journey is far from over—GSA is determined to continue breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and elevating Black voices in international spaces. The anniversary celebration was not only a reflection on the past but also a call to action for the future. GSA aims to inspire the current and next generation of leaders, build a stronger global network, and ensure that racial equity becomes a cornerstone of global policy. With the continued support of the community, GSA is poised to lead impactful initiatives that will shape the next decade and beyond.
